In a victory statement, Mr. Biden's campaign said: "In 2020, it was South Carolina voters who proved the experts wrong, breathed new life into our campaign, and put us on the path to winning the presidency."
South Carolina played a key role in President Biden’s 2020 campaign, with both he and Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black woman and Asian American to hold the office, repeatedly thanking state Democrats for their support.
Mr Biden is also expected to win the second Democratic primary in Nevada next Tuesday. The Democratic primary schedule then continues in Michigan on February 27, followed by a multi-state vote on March 5, known as Super Tuesday.
