In announcing his decision to withdraw, Mr. Biden said: "While I intend to run again, I believe it is in the best interests of the Democratic Party and the country to step down and focus on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term."

Before Mr. Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race in July, several polls showed the incumbent president had a lower or equal chance of winning than Mr. Trump.
