Mr. Putin named a suitable location for peace talks.

At a press conference on October 18 (local time), Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed that Russia considers Saudi Arabia a "friendly country" and praised the Arab country's leaders for their sincere efforts to bring peace .

"If a peace talks are held in Saudi Arabia, that would obviously be a quite comfortable venue for us," the Russian president said.

However, he stressed that any final solution must be based on the draft prepared during the aborted talks in Istanbul, Türkiye, in the spring of 2022.

According to President Putin, the Ukrainian delegation initially accepted a draft treaty that would make Ukraine a neutral country and limit the size of its army, but then abruptly walked away from the negotiating table.

Ukrainian officials explained that they did not trust the Russians and that Western leaders advised them not to accept Moscow's terms.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has since stressed that peace can only be achieved on Kiev's terms, including restoring Ukrainian territory to its 1991 borders.

Moscow declared Mr Zelensky's so-called "peace formula" "unacceptable" and Kiev must recognize the new "territorial realities".

In another development on the same day, Russia and Ukraine carried out a new prisoner of war exchange, each side sending 95 prisoners back to their home country under an agreement brokered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Dmytro Lubinets, a Ukrainian parliamentary human rights commissioner, said this was the 58th prisoner exchange since the conflict broke out and brought the total number of people returning home to 3,767.

A private Russian group claiming to represent the rights of prisoners of war also published a list of repatriates and said most of them were captured in the Kursk region, where the Ukrainian army launched an offensive in August.

The UAE's foreign ministry said it was the ninth time the Gulf state had mediated in the conflict, describing the exchange as "reflecting the UAE's cooperative and friendly relations with both countries".
