Former US President Donald Trump has spoken for the first time about being shot at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, saying, "I was shot with a bullet that went through the upper part of my right ear."

“I knew immediately something was wrong when I heard the whistling, the gunshot, and immediately felt the bullet tear through my skin,” Mr. Trump wrote on the Truth Social page.

On the same day, July 13, the US Secret Service said that there were "multiple shots (fired) towards the stage from a high position outside the campaign venue" in the assassination attempt against Mr. Donald Trump.

"One spectator was killed and two were seriously injured," the agency said, adding that the shooter had been killed, without giving further details.

Also on July 13, US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced that the department will increase protection for presidential candidates Joe Biden of the Democratic Party and Donald Trump of the Republican Party after the shooting at the campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Secretary Mayorkas has strongly condemned the shooting that injured former President Trump while he was attending a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The official said the Department of Homeland Security, the parent agency of the US Secret Service (USSS), will “take every possible measure” to ensure the safety of President Biden, former President Trump and the campaigns of these two candidates.

Regarding the 2024 US presidential election process, a senior Republican official confirmed to CNN that the Republican National Convention will still open on July 15 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as planned.

It is expected that at this event, Mr. Donald Trump will officially be given the ticket to be the candidate representing the Republican Party in the presidential election on November 5.

Meanwhile, an official from President Biden's campaign team said on the same day that they would suspend the President's campaign communications activities and stop airing television commercials as soon as possible.

On the same day, Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, who will officially replace Mr. Obrador next October, spoke out against the incident, affirming that any act of violence does not bring any good results and must be condemned.

The Republican presidential candidate appeared to be the target of an assassination attempt as he spoke at a campaign rally, according to US law enforcement. It was the first assassination attempt on a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

The perpetrator was shot dead by the US Secret Service, in addition to one spectator killed and two others seriously injured in the incident.
