A cheap SanDisk memory card was found completely intact inside an underwater camera among the wreckage of the OceanGate-operated submarine Titan, one of the few intact finds after the tragedy that killed five people in June 2023.

According to technology YouTuber Scott Manley on the X platform, the rescue team during the recovery of the Titan wreck discovered a SubC Rayfin Mk2 Benthic underwater camera. The device's lens was broken, but the case and SD card inside were still intact. Manley said the data on the card seemed to be encrypted or inaccessible.

The Titan, operated by the exploration company OceanGate, exploded while diving near the Titanic wreck in the North Atlantic. The incident killed all five passengers, including Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate. The incident has prompted a series of international investigations to clarify the cause.

Investigators working with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) and the manufacturer of the SubC device extracted data from the memory card. The card reportedly contained a total of nine videos and 12 images. However, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that no images or videos were recorded at the time of the accident. The majority of the data collected was footage taken on the water at the Maritime Institute's testing facility.

While it doesn't reveal any new information about the Titan explosion, the discovery is still considered strange that a cheap electronic device can survive in the harsh environment at the bottom of the ocean. According to Tom's Hardware , the memory card in question is a 512 GB SanDisk Extreme Pro model, which costs about $63 on Amazon. The brand information has been removed from the official investigation documents.

The incident has once again attracted public attention when recent reports from US officials said that the Titan tragedy was a “preventable incident” if OceanGate had followed proper safety standards. According to BBC , design and testing errors made the ship unable to withstand the enormous pressure at a depth of more than 3,800 m, where the Titanic wreck lies.
