Hai Phong women compete to protect the green, clean and beautiful environment

From simple tasks such as sorting waste at source, planting flowers along the roadside, building 'Green House' models... Hai Phong women have practically contributed to building new rural areas and civilized urban areas.

Small model, big meaning

Since 2022, the Tu Ky Commune Women's Union has mobilized cadres and members to participate in household waste classification and provided instructions on how to make IMO probiotics using easy-to-find ingredients such as rice bran, yogurt, ripe bananas, yeast, sugar, etc. After a few days of incubation, the preparation creates a mild aroma, turning waste into organic fertilizer for plants.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha, a member of the women's association of Dai Son village, said that at first, she thought that making yeast was complicated and the waste would smell, but after being given specific instructions and starting to do it, she found it easy to do, did not cause bad odors, and was very useful. There was organic fertilizer, loose soil, and lush green plants.

Up to now, the commune has 16/20 branches with 856 members regularly making and using IMO. The model helps reduce waste to the environment, saves transportation and treatment costs, and brings clear economic benefits. The valuable thing is that environmental protection awareness spreads strongly to the community. The branches combine this model with general cleaning activities in the alleys, organizing "Green Saturday", both beautifying the landscape and strengthening the relationship between the village and the neighborhood.

Sharing the spirit of creativity and environmental protection awareness, the Thanh Ha Commune Women's Union chose to turn scrap into a charity fund. Since 2021, the "Green House" model has been placed at the village cultural house, school, commune People's Committee headquarters and some other convenient locations for members and people to collect plastic waste, cans, scrap paper, metal... Monthly or quarterly, the association sorts and sells scrap. All proceeds are put into the "Green House" fund to support disadvantaged women and children.

After 4 years of implementation, the "Green Houses" covered 23/23 branches, collecting 45.6 million VND, used to give 21 cash packages, 600 kg of rice and 3 health insurance cards to disadvantaged women and children. Chairwoman of the Commune Women's Union Nguyen Thi Thu said that the important thing is that the awareness of women members and people has changed positively. People are gradually getting used to sorting garbage, considering it a daily task.

In Do Son ward, the model earned 248 million VND, giving more than 750 gifts to disadvantaged women and children. Not only in Thanh Ha commune, Do Son ward, 887 "Green Houses" with nearly 49,500 members are replicated throughout the city.

Spreading green lifestyle

Environmental protection has become a vibrant emulation movement among Hai Phong women's union members. All levels of the union maintain and promote the effectiveness of 3,283 environmental protection models associated with the campaign to build "Family of 5 no, 3 clean", "5 yes 3 clean" such as: Green house, green living women, battery house, women's group collecting waste, women's group saying no to disposable plastic products, "turning waste into money", "from waste to scholarships", women's group collecting pesticide packaging, "green living, green consumption" model...

The association at all levels donated 700 organic compost bins, 2 "Green Houses" for waste classification, more than 3,000 green trash bins, 2,000 stainless steel lunch boxes, 9,000 plastic baskets, 15,000 cloth bags, 1,950 trash buckets, and 3,120 rolls of environmentally friendly biodegradable plastic bags to members and women.

According to the Chairwoman of the Kien Hung Commune Women's Union, Vu Thi Phuong, the Commune Women's Union has stepped up propaganda and guidance for members; established inter-family groups on environmental sanitation in 15/15 villages and built the model of "Self-managed women's route", "Sorting waste at source and treating organic waste with IMO microorganisms".

The model has received attention from all levels, sectors and organizations in the area, along with the persistent advocacy of association officials, creating high consensus among the people, striving to bring Kien Hung commune to meet the model new rural standards by the end of 2025.

Vice President of the City Women's Union Pham Thi Thuy Hai said that in the coming time, the union will continue to replicate the "Green House" model and "Organic waste treatment with IMO probiotics". The City Women's Union recommends that there should be preferential mechanisms for families, residential groups, and units that actively participate in the "Green House" model, such as financial support for purchasing trash cans and probiotics, reducing prices for household waste collection services; integrating the content of "classifying and treating waste at source" into target programs and plans for advanced urban and new rural development.

On the other hand, the city has a socialization mechanism, mobilizing businesses to participate in replicating the model. The Association also recommends allocating the budget, building a regular monitoring and evaluation mechanism to maintain and replicate the model, contributing to building a green, clean, beautiful and sustainably developed Hai Phong city.
