Porsche 911 has a hybrid version for the first time

On the new Porsche 911, the hybrid powertrain is equipped on the 911 Carrera GTS version, consisting of a flat-six engine located at the rear typical of the 911 line and an electric turbocharger. This system gives a total capacity of 532 horsepower, 609Nm of torque.

Unlike the remaining versions that continue to use a 3.0L engine, the Carrera GTS model uses a 3.6L engine with 478 horsepower and 570Nm torque, an increase of 5 horsepower compared to the previous version.

The hybrid system allows Porsche to switch to a single electric turbocharger instead of twin turbos. The electric turbocharger is similar to a conventional turbocharger but has a 1 kW (14.7 hp) motor placed between the turbine and compressor.

This motor can quickly boost the turbocharger's rotation speed to very high levels, increasing responsiveness, greatly reducing turbo lag, and simultaneously reverse-charging the 400V battery pack.

There's also a 32.6-horsepower traction motor sandwiched between the petrol engine and the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, powered by a 1.9kWh battery located under the front hood, where the 12V battery is normally located on other 911 models. This helps boost performance across the rev range while maintaining the ideal air-fuel ratio of 14.7:1.

Compared to the previous generation, the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS weighs 46.7kg more but still maintains impressive acceleration thanks to its more powerful engine. Acceleration from 0-96km/h takes just 2.9 seconds.

The car has new active aerodynamic wings at the front to improve cooling without increasing drag. The front and rear have been slightly restyled, with new wheel options and tire sizes. The most notable new feature in the interior is the fully digital instrument panel.

The 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS is expected to arrive at US dealerships later this year with a starting price of nearly $167,000, an increase of about $14,000 over the previous model.
