Quang Ngai celebrates 60th anniversary of Van Tuong Victory

(Chinhphu.vn) – The Van Tuong victory went down in history as a brilliant feat of the nation in the resistance war against the US, creating the foundation for the great victory in the spring of 1975.

On August 18, in the atmosphere of the whole country celebrating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2, the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Quang Ngai province solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Van Tuong Victory (August 18, 1965 - August 18, 2025).

Speaking at the ceremony, Major General Tran Thanh Hai, Deputy Commander of Military Region 5, reviewed the historic battle - where the army and people of Quang Ngai coordinated with the armed forces of Military Region 5 to crush the "Starlight" operation - the first large-scale campaign of more than 8,000 US troops in South Vietnam. This was a preemptive strike against the US expeditionary force right at the beginning of the local war, affirming that our army and people were completely capable of defeating the modern, elite US army, despite having superior advantages in weapons and firepower.

The Van Tuong victory went down in history as a brilliant feat of the nation in the resistance war against the US, contributing to the bankruptcy of the US imperialists' "Local War" strategy, promoting the uprising movement of the army and people of the South, creating the foundation for the Great Spring Victory of 1975.

This victory was not only a military victory but also a victory of the art of people's war under the leadership of the Party, leaving behind many valuable lessons in the art of Vietnamese military war. The most prominent of which was the great lesson of promoting the combined strength of people's war and the combination of operations between the main force and local armed forces. It demonstrated the sharp thinking in the art of commanding and operating the campaign of the Military Region 5 Command.

Mr. U Huan, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Quang Ngai Provincial Party Committee, emphasized: The Van Tuong victory is a symbol of the revolutionary offensive spirit, the intelligence, bravery and solidarity in fighting between the local army and people and the main force of Military Region 5. Places such as Go Hong, Trung Son, An Loc, Loc Tu, An Cuong... have marked the close-quarter battles, tank destruction, and flexible attacks of the armed forces and guerrillas, terrifying the enemy.

The victory also demonstrated the nation's unique military art: "Using the small to defeat the big, using the few to defeat the many", and was also a testament to the strategic talent of the Military Region 5 Command and Quang Ngai Provincial Party Committee in creatively applying the factors of "force, position, time, and strategy".

60 years have passed, the victory of Van Tuong is still imprinted in the memory of the people of Binh Son and Van Tuong, becoming a spiritual symbol of the heroic homeland. The simple and resilient people of Quang Ngai have created extraordinary strength, contributing to the victory of the nation. On the land that once marked the historic victory, today Dung Quat Economic Zone has been formed - where the first oil refinery of the country and hundreds of factories, enterprises and export processing zones operate day and night.

From 6 merged communes including: Binh Thuan, Binh Dong, Binh Tri, Binh Hai, Binh Phuoc and Binh Hoa, Van Tuong commune now has over 60,000 people, is a locality with outstanding potential. The local economy maintains a high growth rate, reasonable structural shift with industry and services accounting for a large proportion; average income per capita exceeds the average of the whole province.

"On behalf of the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province, I call on cadres, party members, and people to promote the revolutionary tradition and the spirit of victory in Van Tuong, unite, firmly believe in the Party's leadership, and continue to achieve many victories in the province's socio-economic development," said Mr. U Huan.

On this occasion, Quang Ngai province held the inauguration ceremony of the project to renovate and embellish the Van Tuong Victory Museum - part of the National Monument "Van Tuong Victory Memorial Sites". The project includes items such as renovating the exhibition house, renovating the exhibition system, renovating auxiliary infrastructure, creating landscapes, etc. This is a project to welcome the 1st Provincial Party Congress, term 2025 - 2030.
