Vietnam Television Center in Ho Chi Minh City (VTV9) has produced and broadcast a special talk show with the theme "Poor quality helmets - Fake shields, real danger"
On September 27, in response to National Traffic Safety Month, Vietnam Television Center in Ho Chi Minh City (VTV9) conducted a special talk show with the theme "Poor quality helmets - Fake shields, real dangers".
At the seminar, experts pointed out that poor quality helmets are infiltrating the market with many sophisticated tricks. An important cause comes from the psychology of cheap prices, focusing on design over quality, and the habit of "wearing helmets to cope" instead of "wearing helmets to protect" oneself. Many consumers are also passive when using free helmets, which are not up to standard. Attaching fake logos of reputable brands makes it even more difficult for people to distinguish between real and fake.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy, Deputy Head of the Market Management Department of Ho Chi Minh City, said that low-quality helmets are sold openly from sidewalks to e-commerce platforms with diverse designs and cheap prices. The inspection and handling process is difficult because the traders use many distribution channels and sophisticated tricks. According to him, this "fake shield" exists from three sides: the ease of consumers, the deceit of sellers and increasingly professional counterfeiting tricks.
The program also simulates the actual test that fake helmets easily break when tested, with almost zero impact absorption capacity. Mr. Mai Van Thuan, General Director of Asia International Group, emphasized that the minimum cost to produce a standard helmet is about 75,000 VND. Therefore, products priced at only 30,000 - 40,000 VND/piece pose many potential risks.
According to data from Metric.vn, in the past 12 months, the e-commerce market has consumed more than 5 million helmets. Experts suggest tightening management on e-commerce platforms, building a set of criteria to authenticate qualified products, and publicly announcing a list of violating establishments to increase deterrence.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy said that the focus of the solution lies in raising consumer awareness. Equipping knowledge to identify standard hats, combined with technology applications such as QR codes to trace origins, is considered the "key" to protecting community safety.
