Real Madrid come from behind to take the top spot in La Liga

VnExpressVnExpress28/01/2024

Spain's 2-1 comeback win over hosts Las Palmas helped Real Madrid extend their unbeaten streak to 15 matches in La Liga.

For the fourth consecutive La Liga game, Real took all three points thanks to a late goal. Vinicius Junior and Aurelien Tchouameni shined with goals to put the home team on top of the table, at least until Girona plays Celta Vigo on Sunday, January 28.

Las Palmas surprised everyone by opening the scoring in the 52nd minute, when former Barca striker Sandro Ramirez crossed from the right into the penalty area for midfielder Javier Munoz to shoot with one touch into the near corner. The goal from the "old man" woke Real up, before the stars spoke up.

The visitors equalised in the 65th minute when midfielder Eduardo Camavinga chipped the ball from the centre to the left of the penalty area for Vinicius Junior to volley with his left foot into the far corner. Real did not celebrate for long, but instead took the ball back to the middle of the field to resume the match. They did not create many chances, but still scored a second goal from a set piece. Toni Kroos took a corner from the right for Tchouameni to run in and head the ball into the far corner to seal a 2-1 win.

Real had a difficult time in this match, as they were without midfielder Jude Bellingham due to suspension, while Federico Valverde, Luka Modric and Tchouameni were only on the bench. The absence of these midfielders meant the visitors could no longer control the match, with a possession rate of only 49%.

Real were not dominant until they conceded, and they even escaped a penalty in the 30th minute when midfielder Dani Ceballos kicked defender Sergi Cardona in the visitors' penalty area. Referee Soto Grado did not call a penalty, and VAR did not intervene in the situation. Recently, Real have been accused by many people of referee bias, including coach Xavi Hernandez.

The game turned around when Valverde and Tchouameni came on, with Real taking control of the game while Las Palmas retreated to preserve the score. When they fell behind, the home team fought back, but by then it was too late.
