On August 5, according to Thanh Nien reporter's source, Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) plans to temporarily close Ca Mau airport for 12 months, from November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2026, to implement package 12 of the airport expansion and upgrade project. The complete closure is necessary because the construction process is directly related to the entire system of runways, taxiways, aprons and auxiliary works.

Package No. 12 has a total construction period of 14 months, expected to start on August 19, 2025 and be completed and put into operation by the end of October 2026. During this time, ACV will direct contractors to speed up progress, strive to shorten construction time to minimize impacts on local socio -economic activities.

Previously, the project to upgrade Ca Mau Airport was approved by the Prime Minister in October 2024, with a total investment capital of more than VND 2,400 billion, invested by ACV. The investment scale is aimed at a level 4C airport standard, qualified to receive medium-range aircraft such as A320, A321, increasing the operating capacity to 1 million passengers/year by 2030 and 3 million passengers/year by 2050.

Currently, Ca Mau airport has a runway 1,500 m long, 30 m wide, level 3C scale, only enough to serve small aircraft such as ATR72 (maximum 90 seats) or Embraer E190 (124 seats). The existing passenger terminal has a designed capacity of 200,000 passengers per year. For many years, this airport has only operated the Ca Mau - Ho Chi Minh City route using ATR72 aircraft, with a frequency of one flight per day. Until mid-2023, Bamboo Airways used to operate the Ca Mau - Hanoi route using Embraer E190 aircraft but has temporarily stopped after a few months of operation.

Regarding the implementation of package No. 12, up to now, the work of land acquisition, compensation and site clearance has been completed by the People's Committee of Ca Mau province. The project affects more than 600 households, individuals and organizations on a total area of nearly 106 hectares, with compensation paid of more than 577 billion VND. The project implementation area is in Tan Thanh Ward, Ca Mau City (formerly Ward 6 and Tan Thanh Ward).
