What can you buy with 100,000 VND at the market at 3am?

The squatting market, a unique squatting market in Vi Thanh (formerly Hau Giang), now part of Can Tho City, opens at 3am and is an interesting experience when traveling here on weekends.

Vi Thanh City, formerly part of Hau Giang Province (now Vi Thanh Commune, Can Tho City), is famous for its unique market: the squatting market - describing the close, close-knit way of squatting of local traders. The market opens from 3am to 9am, so anyone who wakes up late will miss this unique market.

We arrived in Vi Thanh on a weekend. The group agreed to wake up at 4am to go to the market. The streets of Vi Thanh were quiet at that time, only the market along the Xa No canal was lit up and bustling with people calling out.

Dawn in Vi Thanh is quiet as a sheet, only the squatting area is noisy.

The squat market is located on Nguyen Van Troi Street, about 700 square meters wide, with dozens of small stalls of only 2-4 square meters. The sellers sit "squatting" all day next to their piles of goods, which is the name of the market. The market opens from 3 a.m. to about 9 a.m., so anyone who wakes up late will miss the market.

This is a local market located in Vi Thanh market, where the management board takes advantage of vacant land for people to bring home-grown agricultural products and fruits to sell. The rental price for each space is only a few tens of thousands of dong per day.

Since being chosen as a film setting by young director Huynh Lap, the market has suddenly become famous on social networks, attracting young tourists and even foreign visitors to "check-in" every weekend.

At 4am, the market was bustling. Vendors wore headlamps on their heads, buyers held baskets in their hands, their feet covered in mud, haggling busily in the yellow light. Goods were displayed everywhere: water chives, longan, water lilies, bananas, ripe plums, pineapples, wild vegetables... all fresh and fragrant with the scent of fields and gardens.

The friendly salesgirl offered a bunch of golden bananas and said, "Try some, the ripe bananas are very sweet."

The price of bananas here is only 10,000 - 15,000 VND/bunch, ripe plums 25,000 VND/kg. Going a little deeper is the food court, a paradise of rustic breakfast dishes. Corn sweet soup, tapioca dumplings, pork skin cakes, floating cakes... each box is only 10,000 VND, colorful, chewy and fragrant.

Next to it were stalls selling crab noodle soup, porridge, fish noodle soup, rice noodles... steaming hot. We chose to sit down at a small cafe in the middle of the market, laid out our "spoils of war": cakes, bananas, ripe plums, then poured coconut milk on the cake, took a sip of strong coffee and could start a perfect morning amidst laughter, calls and sunlight filtering through the stalls.

Where to stay when visiting the flea market?

If you want to wake up early to go to the flea market without worrying about traveling far, you can choose to stay right in the center of Vi Thanh City or the surrounding area. Some suggestions for comfort and convenience:

Tru by Hilton Can Tho: A 4-star hotel with a youthful, modern style, about 10 minutes away from the flea market. Bright bedrooms, river views and a 24/7 lounge area, perfect for travelers who want to relax and explore the local area.

Hau Giang Riverside Hotel: Located along Xa No canal, just a few minutes walk to the market. Suitable for guests who like quiet space, close to local life.

Chill Western Homestay: Simple garden space, full of flowers and leaves, serving breakfast and early coffee for guests who want to go to the market at 3-4 am.

Tip: Choose a room with a window facing the river to enjoy the cool morning air and easily get to the market by bike or on foot.
