American design firm Rafael Viñoly Architects has revealed plans to renovate Florence Airport's international terminal, incorporating the famous vines of Florence, known as the "heart of Italy's famous wine country".
While exact details have yet to be revealed, the architects say the future terminal will cover 50,000 square metres. It will be topped with a giant sloping roof surrounded by skylights and some 38 rows of climbing plants.
This is said to be Europe’s first airport vineyard. Previously, California’s Halter Ranch vineyard had a private airport for licensed pilots and their wine-loving friends.
According to Euronews, the majority of wine production will likely be done in-house.
“A leading wine producer in the region grows grapes and the wine will be crafted and aged in dedicated cellars beneath the station roof,” explains spokesman Rafael Viñoly.
Below the vineyards, the station design features a large plaza which the architects say will facilitate passenger traffic.
Plans will also rotate the existing runway 90 degrees to better accommodate modern aircraft, as well as improve onward traffic routes via a new light rail system.
Architect Rafael Viñoly has announced that they will work with airport planners to build the structure in two phases.
The first part is expected to be completed in 2026. Meanwhile, the second part will have to wait until 2035 to complete all items.
