(Dan Tri) - Too focused on part-time jobs, many students have to regret because their academic results are declining. Many even have to save their meager salaries to pay back tuition due to missed subjects.

Dropped out of school because of working part-time

As soon as class ended at 5:30 p.m., Nhu Quynh, a fourth-year student at Saigon University, immediately rushed to work. Quynh works as a tutor for a family 13 km from the school, so she always rushed to get there in time to start teaching at 6 p.m.

Because she doesn't have much free time, Quynh often spends her time in class preparing lesson plans.

“When I get home from work it's late so I only have time to rest and prepare for the next morning's classes at school,” Quynh said.

Using class time to prepare materials for extra classes made Quynh encounter many difficulties in studying. She was often distracted when listening to lectures. That is why when it came to exams, the female student had to work hard to review all the knowledge but it was not sure to be effective.

In recent years, the situation of students studying and working at the same time has become more and more common. It is not difficult to see young people rushing after school to coffee shops, shopping malls, etc. to work part-time. Some students even spend most of their time working, causing their studies in class to be interrupted or neglected.

Bui Thuy Duong, a second-year student majoring in Financial Technology, admits that working long hours helps her pay most of her tuition and live a comfortable life. Duong tries to arrange her time by concentrating on her morning classes, completing all her schoolwork, and signing up for the afternoon shift.

As a sales person, Thuy Duong said that there are times when she is very tired, especially when she is short of staff and has to run sales. She usually finishes work at 8-9pm. With this intensity, sometimes she feels quite exhausted and needs to rest earlier.

"There were times when I had to bring my books to work to study. However, there were times when my grades dropped," Duong shared.

The main reason why many students rush into work is financial pressure. Some come from poor families and need to pay for their own tuition and rent. But many work because they want to practice their skills and gain experience to make it easier to find a job later.

However, spending too much time on part-time jobs can have many consequences. Many students often skip classes, causing their academic performance to decline.

Tuong Vy, a second-year student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said she has witnessed many students who are so eager to work part-time that they neglect their studies, leading to credit debt or failing subjects and having to pay to retake classes.

Even Vy’s friends were once caught up in the whirlwind of making money, many times neglecting their studies. More notably, a senior of Vy’s, because of being so engrossed in part-time jobs, had to retake a subject 3 times, wasting both the registration fee and having to ask someone to go to class for him because he couldn’t arrange the time to go to class.

In addition, the pressure from both studying and part-time work can easily lead to stress and health imbalance. At that time, the study goal, which is the main task of students, is pushed to secondary.

Study and work without worrying about losing your foundation

Faced with this situation, many students have begun to think about allocating their time more reasonably. My Le, a second-year student majoring in Information Technology, said she currently spends about 15 hours a week on work and only works 3 days a week.

“In addition to studying in class and working part-time, I also participate in extracurricular activities, school clubs and learn English,” Le said.

Some students choose jobs related to their majors, to turn part-time work into a practical learning opportunity. Duy Hung, a student majoring in Information Technology at Saigon University, said that he does not care too much about salary but takes advantage of the opportunity to improve problem-solving skills, research documents and learn from the experiences of his seniors.

In addition, to balance between studying and working, many students have created schedules and learned how to organize their time more scientifically .

Thao Nguyen, a fourth-year student majoring in Japanese studies, said she has developed a habit of time management since deciding to work part-time.

“In the past, I paid little attention to scheduling my studies and activities. But since I started working, I have had to proactively arrange my work so that it doesn’t overlap,” Nguyen shared.

Making a timetable is an effective method to help many students balance studying and working (Photo: Tuyet Luu).

It is known that Nguyen usually arranges a fixed schedule according to the school timetable. In addition to the average 30 hours of class time per week, the Japanese studies student spends about 25 hours working part-time, 23 hours going to extra classes and studying in her room. The remaining time is allocated for eating, sleeping, club activities or personal entertainment.

“I will work according to the plan to achieve the best results. Of course, there will be days when unplanned work arises, but I will try to rearrange my schedule to balance the tasks,” Nguyen shared.

Similar to Nguyen, Thuy Duong also arranges her timetable clearly. She believes that students who are both studying and working should focus on their studies and most importantly, take care of their health.

Many experts agree that students should prioritize their studies, considering it a solid foundation for career development. Part-time jobs are still valuable, but they need to choose suitable jobs and limit their time to a moderate level. At the same time, students also need to practice time management skills and know how to arrange their study and work schedules more scientifically.

Balancing study and work is not easy, but with a clear plan, students can completely cover their living expenses, gain experience and still maintain their academic results.
