Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education has a year when only 25% of students graduate on time.

Among the large-scale universities in Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education is notable not only because it is one of 14 universities with revenue of more than a thousand billion VND in Vietnam, a top technical training school in the South, but also because the rate of students graduating on time is very low.

According to the public report on activities in 2025 and 2024, the University of Technical Education achieved a total revenue of 1,120 billion VND, of which tuition fees accounted for 976 billion VND. The school currently has more than 30,000 students, recruiting about 8,000 new students each year. In 2022, 66.95% of students graduated, but only 24.54% graduated on time, equivalent to 1/4 of the students enrolled in that course.

In 2023, the graduation rate reached 72.96%, but only 31.56% graduated on time. The number of students with jobs in their major was 62%.

In 2024, the graduation rate dropped to 60.45%, of which 41.14% were on time.

Thus, on average, in the 2022-2024 period, only over 30% of students will graduate on time, or about 3/10 students will graduate on schedule; the rest will have to extend their study time or drop out.

In other schools, the general picture is not bright.

This situation not only occurs at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education but also appears at many other schools in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry currently has about 33,000 students, recruiting nearly 10,000 new students each year. In 2023, the on-time graduation rate reached 46.17%. In 2024, this rate dropped to 40%, while the total number of graduates was only 60.81%.

Meanwhile, Ton Duc Thang University currently has about 23,000 students. In 2024, up to 93.1% of students will graduate within the maximum training framework plus 2 years, but only 41.9% will graduate on time.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, the leading technical training institution in the South, currently has about 30,000 students. However, in 2024, the graduation rate will reach 75.63%, but the school will not announce the number of graduates on time.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics has about 28,000 students and this is a rare bright spot when in 2024, 79.8% of students graduated, of which 74.6% were on time.

At the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, in 2023, the rate of students graduating on time was 58%, but by 2024 it had dropped to 36.4% out of a total of 67.4% of graduates.

Meanwhile, at Ho Chi Minh City Open University, in 2024, the graduation rate reached 64.8%, of which 46.3% were on time.

Looking at the figures above, it can be seen that most schools only achieve 30-50% of students graduating on time. The rare exception is the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City with nearly 3/4 of students graduating on time.

The rate of students dropping out of school also increased.

Along with the fact that few students graduate on time, the dropout rate at many schools is increasing rapidly, especially at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education. At this school, in 2023, the dropout rate was only 0.091%, but by 2024 it had skyrocketed to 24.45%, of which the first-year dropout rate alone accounted for 24.45%.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, in 2023, 3.88% of students dropped out, and in 2024, it increased to 10.72%.

The dropout rate at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology in 2024 is 1.69%, and in the first year alone it is 1.94%.

Meanwhile, at Ton Duc Thang University, in 2024, the dropout rate was 7%, and in the first year it was 5%.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, in 2024, the dropout rate was 3.76%.

At the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, in 2023, the dropout rate was 12%, and in 2024 it decreased to 9.96%, of which the first-year dropout rate was 4.19%.

The number of students dropping out of Ho Chi Minh City Open University in 2024 is 9.81%, of which 6.12% are in the first year.

Speaking with VietNamNet, a representative of a public university said that the rate of students graduating on time at public universities is acceptable, in which the rate of students graduating on time in engineering and technology majors is around 25%-37%.

Graduating from university on time will affect the determination of enrollment targets, but it does not reduce the quality of training. In public universities, training quality must be the top factor, so having good quality will attract high-quality students. Therefore, training quality cannot be sacrificed just to increase the rate of students graduating on time.
