Creating the foundation and basis for the system of specialized high schools to develop

In September 1965, at the Thai Nguyen evacuation area of Hanoi University, the first 38 students of the specialized Math class officially entered the new school year. Decision No. 198/CP of the Government Council allowing the opening of this special class laid the foundation for the specialized education model in Vietnam - a place to discover and nurture students with outstanding talents in Mathematics, and then other basic science fields.

From that first seed, specialized blocks were born one after another: Physics (1985), Chemistry (1992), Biology (1998), expanding Mathematics to Mathematics - Information Technology (1993). In 2010, the Natural Science Specialized High School was officially established on the basis of merging specialized blocks, marking a new maturity of the talent training model in the Vietnamese general education system.

After 60 years, the school has developed into a large-scale educational institution with 5 specialized blocks: Mathematics, Information Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, with 44 classes, more than 1,800 students and a team of nearly 70 staff and teachers, most of whom have postgraduate degrees - a leading pedagogical force in the national high school sector.

Students of the Natural Science Specialized School have won 249/770 medals nationwide at international Olympic competitions (accounting for 32%). Of these, there are 79 gold medals out of a total of 198 gold medals nationwide, accounting for 40%.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long shared: The first special Math class established in 1965 demonstrated the strategic orientation and vision of the Party and State in proactively preparing early and from a distance for training young talents in Mathematics and science and technology; at the same time, it was a historical milestone in the formation and development of the system of Specialized High Schools nationwide.

Looking back over the past 60 years, with the efforts, determination and dedication of generations of teachers and students, the General Science Specialized School has overcome difficulties and challenges and continuously developed. Many generations of students of the school are excellent students, winning many medals and awards at national and international levels. Many generations of students have become excellent scientists and successful businessmen, contributing their efforts and intelligence to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.

Entering a new stage of development, our country has many opportunities and advantages but also has to face many difficulties and challenges, especially the remarkable advances in science and technology that have had and are having a profound impact on all areas of social life. In that context, training high-quality human resources is identified as one of three strategic breakthroughs, a key factor determining the future development of the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that schools continue to strongly innovate their educational models in a broad and deep direction, creating conditions for students to access high-quality education, while encouraging and nurturing exceptionally excellent students. In addition, flexibly integrate parallel activities to educate the tradition of patriotism, pride, history and culture of the nation; have a high sense of responsibility to the community, be ready to contribute, innovate, dare to think and dare to do in the face of new challenges.

Sending his hopes to the teachers and students of the school, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long wished that: The teachers of the school always keep the fire of love for the profession; accompany and create a good environment for students to study and practice. The students try to study diligently, prepare for adulthood, start a career, become scientists, doctors, engineers, managers, businesses, contributing to the development of the country in the new era.

For the Ministry of Education and Training and Hanoi National University, the Deputy Prime Minister suggested researching and finding solutions to innovate the model of specialized high schools in a broad and deep direction, creating a basis and foundation for the system of specialized high schools to develop; researching and developing a project to discover, train and foster young Vietnamese talents; nurturing and training talents from high school to PhD level. In addition, prioritizing investment of resources and adequate funding to upgrade facilities, learning equipment, laboratories, and functional room systems for the Natural Science Specialized High School to be worthy of the No. 1 High School in the country; having mechanisms and policies to recognize and honor teachers and students who have achieved outstanding achievements.

At the ceremony, representing the Party and State leaders, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long awarded the Second Class Labor Medal to the High School for Natural Sciences; the First Class Labor Medal to the Physics Department and the Third Class Labor Medal to the Mathematics Department.

Sharing at the ceremony, Director of Hanoi National University Hoang Minh Son emphasized: "We have the right to be proud that this school has been the home for many poor and excellent students from the countryside to realize their dreams of becoming scientists contributing to the country, a place to nurture talents to later become excellent officials and leaders in agencies from the central to local levels, leading scientists at universities, research institutes, and successful managers and businessmen in large corporations and enterprises... who have been affirming Vietnamese intelligence and mettle, making important contributions to the development of the country. We have the right to be proud that over the past 60 years, the quality of education and training of the school has been increasingly improved, the reputation of the school has been increasingly affirmed, but the identity and spirit of 'specializing in Natural Sciences' have always been preserved. That is the common pride of the school, of Hanoi National University and more broadly, of the whole country".

In the coming time, the leaders of Hanoi National University require the school to continue to affirm its pioneering role in innovation, promote the application of technology and artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, innovate educational methods, build a spearhead training model associated with scientific research, consider foreign languages as the key to integration and develop a team of high-quality teachers.

Looking back on the 60-year journey, Dr. Le Cong Loi, Principal of the Natural Science High School, affirmed: The greatest achievement lies not only in the number of medals or titles, but also in the pioneering training model, international integration and constant innovation - a model that has become a model for the specialized school system nationwide.

In the context of the 4.0 industrial revolution, the school aims to not only be a leader in training excellent students nationally and internationally, but also to become a research and innovation center at the high school level, bringing new fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Quantum Technology into the training program. Along with that, the development of critical thinking, reverse thinking, virtual reality interaction skills and human-machine communication will become the core content in educating the new generation of students.
