Slovakia has a new Prime Minister

Mr. Fico's Social Democratic Orientation Party (Smer-SD) came first in the general election on September 30 and formed a coalition with two other parties.

The appointment ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace and was broadcast live on Slovak media. This is Mr. Fico's fourth time as Prime Minister of Slovakia. During the election campaign, the politician 's Smer-SD party expressed its opposition to military aid to Ukraine.

In the early election of the Council of State ( National Assembly ) of Slovakia on September 30, Smer-SD came first with 42 seats in the 150-seat Parliament. The Progressive Party of Slovakia (PS) came second with 32 seats and the Social Democratic Voice (Hlas-SD) came third with 27 seats. In addition, four other political parties and alliances won seats in the Slovak Parliament - including the OLaNO alliance with 16 seats; the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 12 seats; the Freedom and Solidarity Party (SaS) with 11 seats; and the Slovak National Party (SNS) with 10 seats.

At the first session on October 25, the Slovak National Assembly elected Mr. Peter Pellegrini, leader of Hlas-SD, as Chairman of the National Assembly.

Smer-SD has joined forces with Hlas-SD and SNS to win a majority of 79 seats in the new National Assembly. Smer-SD and Hlas-SD each hold seven ministerial seats, SNS holds two seats and from 2024 will hold the newly created Minister of Sports and Tourism.
