Nurture your passion

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Huong, Dong Giao village (Cam Giang commune) is the third generation in his family to follow the traditional carpentry profession. After 5 years of taking over the family carpentry workshop, he has constantly innovated and created products that both preserve the quintessence of the traditional craft and meet modern needs.

Not only Mr. Huong, nearly a dozen workers at the workshop are mostly young people, sharing the same passion for carpentry. They bring youth, creativity and new knowledge to each product, helping the craft village not only survive but also develop and integrate with the market through sophisticated designs, suitable to tastes and applying technology to production. The young generation of workers is turning traditional carpentry into a creative, modern profession while still preserving cultural values.

“We do this job not only to inherit tradition, but also to turn carpentry into the pride of Dong Giao youth, with beautiful, practical and creative products. Thanks to the hands and minds of young people, Dong Giao carpentry village is continuing the tradition with passion,” Mr. Huong happily said.

As for Nguyen Ngoc Huan, carpentry has been ingrained in his subconscious since he was a child. From his childhood, the sound of chisels and chisels echoing in the workshop fascinated him and nurtured his passion for the profession. Growing up with pieces of wood, he gradually learned from the old craftsmen in the village, gradually honing his skills and understanding each line and sophisticated carving technique.

After many years of working in the carpentry workshop, Mr. Huan has now become one of the main craftsmen, standing out with products that both maintain traditional features and are delicate and unique. For him, carpentry, although dusty and noisy, is not just a job to earn a living, each carving contains the passion and love of the craftsman. That passion not only helps Mr. Huan persevere in his work but also inspires other young people in the village.

It is from the young hands that Dong Giao craft village is being "breathed" with new life, but it is also inseparable from the traditional values of the old generations of craftsmen. They are the ones who have devoted their whole lives to carpentry, with extensive experience, each carving detail, each manufacturing secret is passed down from generation to generation. The ingenuity and meticulousness of the artisans is both a solid foundation and a support for the young generation to continue to create and innovate while still preserving the soul of the traditional craft, creating a new and vibrant appearance for Dong Giao carpentry village.

Expectations of the young generation

Currently, Dong Giao carpentry village has about 2,500 workers directly involved in production, of which up to 80% are young people. This is an optimistic signal for any traditional craft village. The young workforce not only contributes to maintaining stable production activities but is also a decisive factor in the transformation of the craft village from a manual model to technology application, from a traditional market to digital commerce. Thanks to youth, dynamism and creativity, Dong Giao carpentry is gradually taking on a new look, both modern and sustainable.

The elderly artisans of Dong Giao carpentry village are not only the ones who pass on the craft but also the ones who keep the soul of the craft. Mr. Vu Xuan Thep, an artisan of the craft village, said: “We hope that the younger generation will continue to preserve the craft, but at the same time dare to be creative, dare to apply technology and keep up with modern tastes. That is the way for Dong Giao carpentry not only to survive but also to develop sustainably.”

The expectations of the artisans for the young generation are shown through each dedicated, patient instruction and love for the profession. They believe that when the young generation converges enthusiasm, creativity and new knowledge, the traditional carpentry profession will both preserve its cultural values and meet the needs of the modern market. It is the combination of the experience of the predecessors and the youth of the new generation that is creating a craft village that is both sustainable and dynamic, where tradition and innovation coexist, continue and develop.

Mr. Vu Huu Thinh, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Dong Giao Village affirmed: “The young force not only maintains stable production but also determines the transformation of the craft village. Thanks to youth and creativity, Dong Giao carpentry is gradually modernizing, meeting market demand and maintaining traditional cultural values."
