Mr. Ho Thang was born and raised in Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province (old). At that time, his poor hometown was devastated by war, so his whole family had to evacuate to Quang Binh province (old). After many years of wandering in different villages, in 1993, his family returned to Ha Lec village, Kim Ngan commune to live and make a living until now.

In 1993, Ha Lec village was a deserted land, with no residents. There was no electricity, roads, schools, or stations, but in return, this was a fertile, large, and relatively flat land with a water source, so it was very favorable for agricultural production development. To have food in the immediate future, Mr. Thang boldly reclaimed nearly 3 hectares of land to grow cassava and upland rice. During his free time, he went to the forest to get rattan, honey, or went down to the streams to fish and exchange for rice and other necessities.

“Back then, my family had many children so it was very difficult. Some days we were hungry, some days we were full. There were days when the rain and floods lasted for a long time, the village was isolated so the whole family had to eat cassava and wild vegetables to get through the day,” Mr. Thang recalled.

Not resigned to poverty, in 2015, with the attention of the Party and the State in building roads into the village and supporting loans for production development, Mr. Ho Thang was able to plant 2 hectares of acacia forest. In addition, he also planted 5 sao of cassava, 60 pepper trees, hundreds of fruit trees of all kinds, built barns to raise buffalo, cows and free-range chickens, so the family income became more and more stable, and life gradually improved.

After accumulating capital, from 2020 to now, Mr. Ho Thang continues to invest in growing coconut and red-fleshed Thai jackfruit. Currently, his farm has 5 sao of land for growing coconut, 5 sao of cassava, 5 sao of grapefruit, 60 Thai jackfruit trees, and 50 pepper trees. At its peak, his herd of goats grew to 80, and his herd of free-range chickens to over 400. From the economic model of raising livestock and growing crops, on average, each year, his family has an income of about 120 million VND.

Mr. Ho Thang shared: “Currently, the goats, chickens and crops such as cassava and pepper provide a steady income, while the fruit trees I have only planted for 3-5 years are just beginning to bear fruit. If well cared for and prices are stable, income will increase next year.”

Chairman of Kim Ngan Commune People's Committee Dang Van Duong commented: "Although being an ethnic minority, Mr. Ho Thang and his wife in Ha Lec village are very hard-working. He is a pioneer in borrowing capital to develop production. In addition to being good at economics, he also regularly helps those in difficult circumstances, willing to share experiences, capital, plant varieties, and livestock with households in the commune so that they can develop economic models, thereby rising out of poverty. Mr. Thang is truly a shining example for many people in Ha Lec village to learn and follow."
