Algeria football tragedy: More than 70 people injured and killed while celebrating the championship

TPO - The joy of MC Alger's coronation at the Algerian national championship quickly turned into tragedy when a serious accident occurred, killing at least 3 people and injuring more than 70 others.

The incident happened just minutes after the final whistle in the match between MC Alger and NC Magra, bringing the capital team a second consecutive national championship title.

Thousands of fans rushed forward to celebrate, causing a security fence to collapse, sending dozens of people falling from the upper stands to the lower level.

According to information from the Algerian Ministry of Health , Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded.

In addition, Ben Aknoun Hospital received 27 injured people and Bab El Oued Hospital received another 16 cases. Most of the victims have been treated and discharged.

One of the three victims who died was identified as a fan named Younes Amguzzi. “It is with deep sadness and grief that we received the news that our fan Younes Amguzzi passed away after falling from the stands,” MC Alger club shared on Instagram.

The stadium was packed on the day MC Alger won their second consecutive national championship. The atmosphere during the match was electric, with flares flying all over the stadium.

In an act of solidarity and community responsibility, MC Alger players and coaching staff went to the hospital to donate blood to support the injured.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune sent his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
