Tu Hieu Pagoda, located on Duong Xuan hill (Thuy Xuan ward, Hue city), has become an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists over the years. Especially on the occasion of the 15th day of the 7th lunar month, Vu Lan, a large number of tourists flock here not only to pay homage to Buddha and enjoy the fresh air, but also to listen to the story of the filial piety of the founder.
According to history books, Tu Hieu Temple was originally just a hermitage called An Duong, founded by Patriarch Nhat Dinh in 1843. He practiced asceticism while taking care of his elderly mother.
In 1848, Venerable Hai Thieu Cuong Ky built a large-scale structure with the support of the royal court and eunuchs. Later, King Tu Duc bestowed the horizontal plaque "Sac tu Tu Hieu tu", to praise the filial piety of Patriarch Nhat Dinh.
The touching story originating from a Buddhist monastery about filial piety has become a symbol of children's filial piety towards their parents.
Throughout its existence, generations of monks continued to renovate, build, and embellish the landscape, making the pagoda both ancient, natural, poetic, and unique. This ancient temple became more famous since Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh returned here to rest in his final years before passing away.

Compassion and Filial Piety means: "Compassion is the great virtue of Buddha. Without compassion, how can we help the four living beings and save all species? Filial Piety is the first virtue of Buddha. Without compassion, how can we reach the mysterious realm that covers heaven and earth?"
