On September 22, Mr. Le Ngoc Tuan, Head of the Hue City Forest Protection Department, said that the forest rangers and the Hue City forestry sector had just inspected and discovered many rare ancient tea trees in the A Luoi mountain area.
After collecting and analyzing samples, the latest results determined that two tea samples collected in sub-areas 341 and 344 (A Luoi commune) matched both morphology and genes with the Shan tea variety - a rare tea with the scientific name Camellia sinensis var. assamica .
This is the result of many surveys by Hue City forest rangers in August and early September 2025.
From 8 tea samples collected in different sub-regions, only 2 samples had the characteristics of Shan tea, the remaining 6 samples were significantly different from the reference variety.
Shan tea, commonly known as Tuyet tea, is famous for its layer of fine white fluff covering the young buds like snow, ancient tree trunks, large, thick leaves, and prominent veins.

This precious tea is only known in the northern mountainous regions, has low productivity but distinctive flavor and high economic value.
From this discovery, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hue has proposed that the People's Committee of Hue City assign the Department of Science and Technology to develop an in-depth research project on the distribution area, natural reserves as well as the ability to reproduce and develop into a new raw material area for the locality.
