Türkiye speaks out about gas trading center with Russia, plans to set up company

On August 20, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that Ankara and Moscow do not have any problems related to the gas hub project, which needs more time.

“We are planning to set up a company to serve the gas trading center. We plan to set up a joint venture with Russia,” Bayraktar said in an interview with Turkey’s Milliyet newspaper.

"We have no problem with Russia. Gas will be traded at the gas trading center, prices will be formed," the Turkish Energy Minister affirmed.

In June 2024, Chairman of the Energy Committee of the Russian State Duma Pavel Zavalny announced that decisions on the construction of the Turkish gas hub project would be completed this year.

This project was first discussed in October 2022.

At that time, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed redirecting gas shipments from the Nord Stream pipeline damaged by the explosion to Ankara.

By December 2023, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak confirmed that the country's energy giant Gazprom and Ankara had agreed to prepare a roadmap for Turkey's gas hub project and further decisions on the project would be announced soon.
