Weather forecast for October 12: Floods on Cau and Thuong rivers continue to recede slowly

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on the afternoon and evening of October 12, the area from Quang Tri to Lam Dong and the South will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall ranging from 10-30mm, with some places experiencing heavy rain of over 80mm. The meteorological agency warned that thunderstorms may include tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind, with rainfall intensity exceeding 60mm in 3 hours in some areas.

Localized heavy rains may cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes and flooding in low-lying areas. The risk level of natural disasters due to heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning and hail is at level 1.

Heavy rain in the Central, Central Highlands and Southern provinces can cause flooding in urban areas, industrial zones, flash floods on small rivers and streams and landslides in mountainous areas.

Meanwhile, floods on Cau River and Thuong River ( Bac Ninh ) are continuing to recede. The water level at 3:00 a.m. on October 12 was recorded at Dap Cau station at 6.10m (about 0.20m below alert level 3); at Phu Lang Thuong station at 6.91m (about 0.61m above alert level 3).

It is forecasted that in the next 12 hours, flood on Cau River at Dap Cau station will continue to decrease and be above alert level 2; flood on Thuong River at Phu Lang Thuong station will continue to decrease but still above alert level 3. In the next 12-24 hours, water levels on these two rivers will fall below alert levels 2 and 3, respectively.

Flooding in Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Lang Son provinces and Hanoi city is forecast to continue for the next 1-2 days, especially in riverside communes and wards and low-lying areas. Authorities warn of the risk of riverbank erosion, dyke collapse, and landslides; and note the risk of environmental pollution and epidemics in areas where floodwaters recede.

At sea, the low pressure trough with its axis at about 13-16 degrees North latitude continues to operate. The central and southern areas of the East Sea, including the Truong Sa archipelago, will have scattered showers and thunderstorms. During the night of October 11 and October 12, the sea areas from Quang Tri to Ca Mau, from Ca Mau to Kien Giang , the Gulf of Thailand and the central and southern areas of the East Sea are all likely to experience tornadoes, strong gusts of wind of level 6-7, and waves over 2m high.

Forecast agencies recommend that ships operating in the above areas should proactively avoid strong winds and big waves to ensure safety for people and vehicles.
