Hydropower plant capacity short of 5,000 MW, North continues to have power outages

On June 12, information from the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that, through assessing the electricity supply situation for hydropower plants on June 11, the water flow to many hydropower reservoirs had decreased quite sharply compared to June 10.

Many hydroelectric reservoirs in the North have drained dead water levels but there are still many difficulties in ensuring electricity supply.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the recent past, due to the restriction of mobilizing large multi-purpose hydropower plants (except Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant) to prepare for the upcoming hot days, the water level in many hydropower reservoirs as of June 11 was above the dead water level.

However, the water flow to hydroelectric reservoirs has decreased by 26% compared to June 10. Accordingly, the total capacity that cannot be mobilized from the hydroelectric plants of Son La, Lai Chau , Ban Chat, Huoi Quang, Tuyen Quang, Thac Ba, Hua Na, and Ban Ve is about 5,000 MW.

Regarding thermal power supply, on June 11, 6 coal-fired thermal power plants in the Northern region had reduced capacity (An Khanh, Nghi Son 2, Cam Pha, Hai Phong, Thai Binh 2, Mong Duong 1). In addition, some generators with short-term problems have been reconnected to the national grid such as Son Dong S2, L1B-S1 Mong Duong 1. The problem at Nghi Son S1 Thermal Power Plant has been resolved and is expected to be reconnected to the grid tomorrow, June 13.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade also said that up to now, enough coal fuel has been mobilized for power generation. However, due to the need to mobilize large capacity continuously for a long time, some generators still have problems. Of which, the total capacity of generators with long-term problems is about 2,100 MW; short-term problems are about 550 MW.

Despite implementing many operational management solutions, due to difficulties in power sources, on June 11, the total capacity reduction in the North was about 2,744 MW. This is the reason why many areas in provinces and cities continue to suffer from power cuts and outages.

Update on transitional renewable energy projects, as of June 11, 51 projects with a total capacity of 2,852 MW have submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for approval of temporary electricity prices; 40 projects with a total capacity of 2,367 MW have signed power purchase contracts; 8 plants are undergoing testing; 14 plants have completed testing and 9 plants have been put into commercial operation (COD) and connected to the national grid.
