Tom Cruise stars in horror film 'Deeper'

Filmmaker Doug Liman shared this information with Showbiz411's Roger Friedman at a recent screening of the documentary Gaucho Gaucho in New York, expressing his interest in making a "horror" film at this stage in his career. "I've never made a horror film, and neither has Tom Cruise," the director said.

While some reports have suggested that Deeper could be Liman's next project, it's unclear whether that will actually happen. Sources have confirmed to Deadline that the film is in development at Warner Bros.

Deeper tells the story of an explorer who encounters a terrifying force while diving into an uncharted ocean trench. In development for nearly a decade, the project was initially developed at MGM in April 2016 with Bradley Cooper starring and Kornél Mundruczó directing. Idris Elba and filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur collaborated on a later project that also did not move forward.

If this final project is successful, it will be the third film marking the collaboration between Tom Cruise and Doug Liman after Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and American Made (2017). Currently, the two are planning a NASA film to be shot in space, in partnership with SpaceX, this project is still in development.

Doug Liman is on a roll with his Road House remake, which hits theaters in March 2024 and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, giving Amazon MGM Studios its biggest opening ever. More recently, Doug Liman's Apple Studio-produced The Instigators , starring Casey Affleck and Matt Damon, hits theaters in August 2024. Both films are said to have sequels in development.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise is currently in talks to star in Paramount Pictures' sequel to Days of Thunder, which hit theaters in 1990. Following Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , the sequel Mission: Impossible – The Final Rekconing will hit theaters in the summer of 2025 and will be the last installment in the franchise to feature Tom Cruise in the iconic role of Ethan Hunt. He will continue filming a new film directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu for Warner Bros and Legendary, but not much is known about this film.
