Mr Biden told hundreds of union workers in Pennsylvania that it was time for the super-rich to start paying their fair share of taxes.

Mr. Biden launched his 2024 presidential re-election campaign on April 25. The rally was sponsored by the AFL-CIO, the union representing 12.5 million American workers and which officially endorsed President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris the day before.

In his remarks, President Biden also described blue-collar workers as the "backbone" of the economy . He pledged to protect Social Security and other welfare programs that help ordinary Americans.

President Biden said reforms are needed to ensure middle-class prosperity, including reforming a tax code that is currently “unfair,” with the 55 largest corporations in the US paying no federal income tax on $40 billion of their profits.

Mr Biden also noted that the number of billionaires in the US has increased to about 1,000. He said they pay an average tax rate of 8%, which is lower than teachers and firefighters, and it is time for the super-rich to pay a minimum tax rate.
