President Joko Widodo wants Vietjet Air and FPT to invest more in Indonesia

President Joko Widodo suggested that large Vietnamese enterprises such as Vietjet Air andFPT invest more heavily in Indonesia, including the new capital Nusantara.

At the beginning, President Joko Widodo said that Indonesia and Vietnam share the same vision of becoming high-income countries by 2045. To achieve this, the two sides need to increase dialogue and high-quality cooperation.

At the meeting, Indonesian President Joko Widodo asked large Vietnamese enterprises such as VinFast, Vietjet Air, and FPT to invest more heavily in the country.

He hopes Vietjet Air will open more routes to tourist destinations in Indonesia. Sovico Group will invest in tourism and real estate projects while FPT Software will invest in the technology sector.

In addition, he also hopes that more Vietnamese enterprises will invest in areas that Indonesia is interested in, such as banking, finance, high technology, and manufacturing. In particular, he noted large, symbolic projects such as investment in the new capital Nusantara.

Not only that, Indonesia has great potential for green development, has opened a carbon trading floor and is promoting the development of the electric vehicle industry.

Mr. Widodo mentioned VinFast and suggested that the company expand its investment in the electric vehicle sector. "I hope VinFast will cooperate strongly with Indonesian businesses and scientists," he said. In November 2023, Indonesian President Moeldoko, Chief of Staff to the President, said that VinFast will invest 18.6 trillion rupiah (1.2 billion USD) and build a factory in the country.

In response to this information, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said "there is no reason why businesses of the two countries should not learn about and invest in each other". Because Vietnam and Indonesia have many similarities, they are two economies that can complement each other. "We are two populous countries, accounting for two-thirds of ASEAN's population", he said.

The Prime Minister also supported President Joko Widodo’s desire to attract investment to Indonesia’s new capital. He called this a bold idea and encouraged Vietnamese businesses to invest, contributing to Indonesia’s early achievement of the set goals.

In return, he also welcomed Indonesian businesses that have invested in Vietnam, including very successful projects that have become models in economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Prime Minister said that Vietnam encourages businesses to invest in emerging economic sectors such as digital economy, green economy, circular economy and sectors in which Indonesia has strengths and Vietnam has demand such as Halal food (providing products and services that meet standards for Muslims) and agriculture. He hopes that Indonesian businesses will cooperate and support Vietnamese businesses to participate in the supply chain in Indonesia and globally.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also pledged to the Indonesian business community to create the best conditions for them to invest stably, long-term and successfully in Vietnam, including perfecting institutions, building infrastructure and training human resources, with the motto "open policies and institutions, smooth infrastructure, smart governance".
