(CLO) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will visit Moscow in May to attend the celebration of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, according to information from Russia's TASS news agency on Tuesday.

According to Palestinian Ambassador to Russia, Mr. Abdel Hafiz Nofal, President Abbas has accepted an invitation from Moscow and will be present at this important event.

The Kremlin said earlier it had invited many countries to attend the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, which will take place on May 9 in Red Square. Victory Day is one of Russia's most important holidays, held annually to commemorate the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico is one of the few Western leaders confirmed to attend. North Korean troops are also expected to take part in the parade in Red Square, according to the Kremlin.

Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said troops from 19 “friendly” countries had been invited to take part in the parade. Russia considers countries that have joined Western sanctions “unfriendly states” and they are unlikely to be present at this year’s event.

The attendance of President Mahmoud Abbas reflects the close relationship between Palestine and Russia. Moscow has long maintained close ties with the Palestinian Authority and supports a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
