The Toyota Hilux Champ was launched in 2023 in several Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Indonesia. With its unique modular design and affordable price, the model quickly won the hearts of many customers. Now, Toyota is expanding the product line with the most compact version ever, aiming at urban transportation. Called the Super Short Wheelbase or Short SWB, this version is 4,520mm long with a 2,580mm wheelbase. This makes it 450mm shorter than the regular SWB version and 780mm shorter than the long wheelbase LWB version.
The other basic dimensions of the new generation Toyota Hilux Champ pickup truck remain unchanged, including the familiar front end. The significant change lies in the operating capacity. The Hilux Champ SWB's shortened wheelbase allows for a turning radius of 4.7m, which is much sharper than the 4.9m and 5.4m figures of its larger siblings. Despite its compact dimensions, the single-cab design still has enough room for a 1,867mm long rear bed. This is larger than a conventional double-cab medium-duty pickup, although it still can’t match the 2,647mm long rear bed of the Hilux Champ LWB.
The Super SWB comes in a single trim level called the "Attractive Package". Despite its modest equipment, it packs more features than the base Hilux Champ. The exterior features LED headlights, black body cladding, an unpainted front bumper and 14-inch black steel wheels. Inside, the cabin sticks to a simple formula: black upholstery with orange accents, no infotainment screen, and basic practical features. These include electric mirrors and windows, manual seats, air conditioning, a pair of speakers, a USB Type-C port, and even a sun visor. Safety tech is equally simple, limited to ABS, EBD, dual airbags and Forward Collision Warning. Under the hood is the familiar 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine, producing 148 horsepower and 343Nm of torque.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. The pickup sits on a ladder-frame chassis with a body on top, adapted from the larger Hilux but still retaining its inherent strength. In Thailand, the Hilux Champ Super SWB Attractive package starts at 615,000 Baht (VND 502 million). Oddly enough, this price makes it the most expensive version in the lineup, surpassing the slightly longer SWB version which starts at 602,000 (VND 491.4 million).
