Before the Miss Grand International final: Miss Yen Nhi is at a disadvantage because of her "slip of the tongue"

After the first 2 days of “calm seas” with a series of images that were considered quite neat and energetic, the Vietnamese beauty representative attending Miss Grand International 2025 - Miss Yen Nhi - continuously encountered many controversies related to her foreign language ability, behavior and personal statements. That made her lose points with domestic and international audiences.

Yen Nhi is facing many disadvantages that limit her chances of going far in the Miss Grand International pageant. First was the exchange between the contestants and the President of Miss Grand, Mr. Nawat Itsaragrisil last weekend. When asked in English: “What is your hobby in your country?”, Yen Nhi appeared confused and had to ask the contestant sitting next to her to “remind her.”

The video quickly went viral, leaving many viewers disappointed because the Vietnamese representative was considered not to have met international communication standards. With such limited English skills, Yen Nhi had difficulty behaving in the sub-rounds (where contestants score important points), making it difficult to make a strong impression on the international judges.

Because of that, after more than a week of competition activities, Yen Nhi was absent from the top 15 Talents, which was an opportunity for contestants to break through. If she continues to fail to make it to the top in the next sub-rounds, Yen Nhi will lose points and be overshadowed by the judges and the audience.

Not only that, the insensitive statements during the contest have fueled conflicting opinions, making the public skeptical about the preparation of the Vietnamese representative. Yen Nhi once revealed: “Before going international, Nhi did not know the nature of the contest or what the criteria were. I just knew to be as comfortable as possible. I am also among the youngest contestants.”

This tactless statement made the audience judge Yen Nhi as not being serious about the contest. Because finding out information about the contest is the first thing that must be done, if you do not clearly understand the requirements of the organizing committee, how can you be confident and prepare a suitable strategy to express yourself and conquer the crown.

Not long after that, Miss Grand Vietnam 2025 caused a stir in public opinion when a recording of Yen Nhi was leaked during her roommate’s (Miss Tanzania) livestream. The content of that conversation contained inappropriate language and was not appropriate for the role of a beauty queen.

Faced with a wave of negative reactions, Yen Nhi publicly apologized, admitting that she was not truly complete in her sharing. Even the representative of Yen Nhi's management agency later had to speak up to "defend" her, saying "I hope the audience sympathizes with a young girl who is competing in an international competition for the first time, and can easily explode when under pressure."

It can be seen that, on the journey of the international beauty pageant, while other contestants actively practice communication skills, build personal images and carefully plan their competitions, Yen Nhi still seems to be confused when wanting to highlight herself among the crowd of beauties.

In addition, the support from the home audience is an important factor, a source of spiritual encouragement to help contestants confidently show themselves in a fiercely competitive environment. However, her lack of tact and "slip of the tongue" before important rounds caused Yen Nhi to lose points with her home fans.

The opportunity for Vietnamese beauty to go far and make a mark in the international arena is not much left. Yen Nhi will have to make a lot of effort in the final days of the "race" if she wants to improve her image and score points with the judges.

This year’s competition attracts 67 contestants from around the world to Thailand. The contestants will compete in swimsuit, national costume, and private interviews before entering the final night, which will take place on October 18./.

Miss Grand International (MGI) was founded in 2013 by Mr. Nawat Itsaragrisil, a Thai national. The contest aims to spread the message of peace and call for an end to war and violence.

The contest takes place annually, rotating in many countries. In Vietnam, Miss Grand has taken place twice in 2017 (in Kien Giang) and 2023 (Ho Chi Minh City). Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien won the crown in 2021 in Thailand.
