On the night of September 29, in Giang Pang village (Son Luong commune, Lao Cai province), heavy rain due to the influence of storm No. 10 lasted for many hours, causing the whole village to be immersed in absolute darkness, mixed with the sound of howling wind and pouring rain. At this time, the loudspeaker system was almost unable to function due to the sound of pounding rain and howling wind.
Realizing the risk of landslides at any time, Mr. Giang A Rinh (born in 1987), who has worked at the grassroots level for nearly 10 years, did not hesitate.
Mr. Rinh decided to run all night, weaving through slippery paths to knock on doors and call on people to move quickly.
“I know clearly which areas in the village are prone to landslides. Any delay would be very dangerous. If you call from afar, the sound of the rain and wind will drown it out and no one will hear. The only way is to go to the house.” Mr. Rinh shared.
Within a few hours, from dusk until about 8:00 p.m. the same day, Mr. Rinh promptly mobilized the evacuation of 20 households from the dangerous area.
Just about 15 minutes after the two families left their homes, rocks and soil suddenly fell from above, burying their entire house. Luckily, both families narrowly escaped.
Mr. Giang A Cang, one of the people who just escaped, emotionally said: “If it weren't for Mr. Rinh, the people wouldn't have been able to avoid this. I'm very grateful to Mr. Rinh, who didn't hesitate to risk his life to save the people.”
That very night, the homeless families were taken care of by Mr. Rinh and the villagers. One family was welcomed by the village chief himself to stay temporarily in his house, the other family was helped by the community.
Mr. Trinh Xuan Thanh, Secretary of the Party Committee of Son Luong commune, acknowledged that the actions of village chief Giang A Rinh demonstrated the decisiveness, sense of responsibility and courage of grassroots cadres.
According to Mr. Thanh, this timely action contributed to protecting the lives of many households during the night of heavy rain and floods.
Not only stopping at rescuing people in danger, right after temporarily ensuring safety for the people, village chief Giang A Rinh continued to mobilize households with less damage and better conditions to share food and temporary accommodation with households that lost their homes.
At the same time, he called on charitable organizations and individuals to support Giang Pang village to soon overcome difficulties and stabilize its life.
Giang Pang village has 95 households with more than 500 people, all of whom are Mong people. After the flood, the whole village had 75 households suffer damage, of which 2 households had their houses completely collapsed, 13 households were affected by landslides, the rest mainly suffered crop damage. The road to the village is currently cut off by many landslides, leaving Giang Pang isolated.
