From Kluivert, Troussier, looking towards Park Hang-seo

Asia used to eagerly welcome coaches “from Europe” with a glorious halo, but from Indonesia to Vietnam, reality shows: reputation has never been a guarantee of success.

Patrick Kluivert soon lost his job in Indonesia.

Indonesia fired Patrick Indonesia after 9 months in charge. Before that, Vietnam also decided to terminate the contract with famous coach Philippe Troussier early. These farewells confirm that great reputation does not mean success.

Famous but not praised

Fired after 9 months despite the contract lasting up to 2 years, the Indonesian Football Federation indirectly admitted its mistake (PSSI) in choosing a famous coach to lead the Indonesian team. Obviously, when placing trust in the former Dutch striker, PSSI once praised Mr. Patrick Kluivert as "a European-class coach who will raise the level of the Dutch team". It is very clear that the PSSI leadership has a burning desire for the national team to win a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

From firing Mr. Patrick Kluivert and looking to Vietnam, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) also fell into a similar tragedy. With the dream of reaching the continental level after the successes with Coach Park Hang-seo, the belief in a world- class coach will take the Vietnamese team to a new level.

Mr. Troussier made his name known in the international arena when he led Japan to the 2002 World Cup. But then, that trust was shattered when the "matchmaking" between Mr. Troussier and VFF also ended halfway.

Both Mr. Kuivert and Troussier left early due to not achieving the desired results.

Both Kuivert and Troussier left early due to not getting the desired results. In 9 months in charge in Indonesia, Kluivert only had 3 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses in a total of 8 matches, including friendlies.

In the wins, Indonesia only won against mid-level teams like Bahrain, China, Chinese Taipei, but still showed weakness against stronger opponents like Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Iraq.

With Coach Troussier, VFF was patient so Troussier had more time to work, leading both U23 Vietnam and the national team. However, that was only responded by the image of the national team lacking fighting spirit, poor performance. The heavy defeat against Indonesia in the second qualifying round at My Dinh Stadium was like the last straw forcing VFF to proactively propose to terminate the contract early after more than 1 year of cooperation.

The important thing is to fit

It can be seen that the common idea of PSSI and VFF is the desire to raise the level of the national team. With the view that to take off, it is necessary to have a high-class and famous coach. However, the failures of coach Patrick Kluivert or Philippe Troussier confirm that success does not come from past reputation.

The most important thing is to choose the right person, understand the culture, understand the player's ability and on that basis, build a strategy suitable to the ability of the local players. This has also been proven in the Indonesian and Vietnamese national teams before and after the presence of the two European strategists.

Park Hang-seo came to Vietnam in late 2017 after consecutive failures of the Vietnamese teams. Under the Korean strategist, the Vietnamese team made a strong comeback by winning the AFF Cup and entering the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup.

Coach Kim Sang-sik once again showed his cool hand with Vietnamese football.

After firing Mr. Troussier, VFF invited another Korean coach, Mr. Kim Sang-sik. In the "ruins" created by Mr. Troussier, the national teams rose up again. The clearest evidence is the championship of AFF Cup 2024.

In Indonesia, before Kluivert arrived, coach Shin Tae-yong gradually turned Indonesia into a difficult opponent to beat. Four points in the previous two matches against Saudi Arabia, which Kluivert had to accept defeat, is a clear demonstration of the ability to improvise between the two strategists.

Both Kluivert and Troussier brought the idea of attacking football to Indonesia and Vietnam. In theory, it was a “beautiful dream” but in the end, both were “crushed” by that “beautiful dream” and had to leave early. Because it was unrealistic, not suitable for a football country that did not have enough people to use attack as a guideline for tactics like the Netherlands or Japan.

Looking at reality, understanding the strengths, weaknesses and culture of local players, Park Hang-seo, Kim Sang-sik and Shin Tae-yong chose a more suitable playing style. Not beautiful, not fancy but not ugly either, the three Korean coaches chose a practical counter-attacking defense strategy for the Vietnamese and Indonesian teams to create a respectable position in the international arena.
