On October 23, Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky announced that the country has exported about 700,000 tons of grain through the new export corridor on the Black Sea since August.

Mr. Solsky also said that in September, Ukraine exported 2.3 million tons of agricultural products from the country's small ports on the Danube River, bringing the total amount of food exported last month to 3.6 million tons.

However, to maintain the agricultural sector - one of the important sectors of the economy , Ukraine needs to export about 6 million tons/month.

Ukraine's Agriculture Minister said that this volume of transport can only be guaranteed when the country's deep-water ports in Odessa region restore full operation.

After Russia announced the termination of the Black Sea grain deal in July, Ukraine announced the creation of a “humanitarian corridor” along the western Black Sea coast, near Romania and Bulgaria, to clear the way for cargo ships stranded at its ports.

Ukraine's grain exports are set to fall 29.7% to 8.3 million tonnes in the July 2023-June 2024 crop year, according to the Agriculture Ministry, as of October 23.

Ukraine's Ministry of Agriculture estimates the country will harvest 79 million tonnes of grain and oilseeds in 2023, with exports in the 2023-2024 crop year possibly reaching 50 million tonnes.

* On the same day, German Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir said that the European Union (EU) needs to make every effort to ensure that Ukraine can export its agricultural products to the group of countries in the Southern Hemisphere (poor and developing countries).

“We are doing everything to allow Ukraine to export grain through the Black Sea. Our common goal is that Ukraine will be able to sell its agricultural products to the group of countries of the Southern Hemisphere,” Minister Cem Özdemir stressed.

According to Mr. Özdemir, Germany is making efforts to resolve this issue, especially in negotiations with his Ukrainian counterpart Mykola Solskyi.

He also appreciated that Poland was more proactive in this matter.
