Exactly one month later than originally planned, the European Parliament (EP) has approved all 26 members of the new European Commission (EC) of EC President Ursula von der Leyen - who was recently re-elected.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen
The outcome was a happy one, but the process to get there was difficult for Ms. von der Leyen personally and for the new members of the EC.
What is noteworthy, both interesting and humorous about the formation of the new EC term, is that the faction in the EP that nominated Ms. von der Leyen to re-take the position of EC President did not have a majority in the EP. This woman was elected thanks to the support of the Green Party in the EP, of course with major concessions on environmental and energy policy. The far-right and populist faction in the EP strongly opposed Ms. von der Leyen. But in the recent approval of 26 EC members, the Green Party opposed while the far-right and populist faction supported.
The above developments are an ominous sign for Ms. von der Leyen and her colleagues in the new EC term. For each law, policy, plan, or project that the EC needs the approval of the EP to be able to disburse financial resources, Ms. von der Leyen and her colleagues must seek majority support in the EP. That means the female EC President must accept concessions and pay the price, wasting a lot of time and effort.
Therefore, the new term of Mrs. von der Leyen and the EC will be more difficult and complicated than the previous term. Although the beginning is smooth, the end is smooth, but the EU has not overcome all hardships.
