A 'giant' fist-sized stone in the bladder of a 36-year-old patient

After decades of development, the bladder stone of a female patient in Pleiku ward (Gia Lai) grew to a size of more than 10cm, almost occupying the entire bladder.

On July 16, Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital announced that general surgery doctors had successfully removed a huge bladder stone, measuring more than 10cm in diameter, from a female patient.

Accordingly, the patient carrying a huge bladder stone is Ms. VTTN (36 years old), residing in Pleiku ward, Gia Lai.

Doctor Hoang Van Cong, Department of General Surgery, informed that patient N. had a history of bladder stones since childhood, often had frequent urination, and pain in the lower abdomen, but did not receive complete treatment.

Recently the pain increased, there was burning urination and passing of gravel in the urine, so the patient went to the hospital for examination.

After taking the X-ray, the doctor discovered that the patient had a large stone in his bladder that occupied the entire bladder cavity, posing a risk of mucosal damage, infection, and impaired urinary function. The patient was scheduled for open bladder surgery to remove the stone.

Proceeding to open the patient's bladder, the doctor removed a large stone, measuring more than 10cm. The outer layer of the stone was soft, unstable in structure, and shattered when removed, but the core of the stone was quite hard and round.

With the above patient's condition, doctors estimate that the patient has had stones in her bladder for about 30 years. Currently, Ms. N's health is stable, the surgical wound is progressing well and she is eligible for discharge.

Doctor Cong recommends that when unusual signs such as painful urination, frequent urination, and pain in the lower abdomen appear, people should not be subjective but should immediately go to a medical facility for timely examination and treatment.
