On the afternoon of October 5, Colonel Nguyen The Vinh - Commander of the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command - confirmed that a fishing boat of this province was sunk by a foreign cargo ship at sea. The report of the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command said that the ship that caused the accident was a Korean oil tanker, IMO number 009448853.

According to information from the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command, on the morning of October 5, this agency received a report from Cat Khanh Border Guard Station about the fishing boat BD-83019 being sunk at sea.

Specifically, this fishing boat is owned and captained by Mr. Nguyen Tran Ut (50 years old, residing in An Quang Tay village, De Gi commune, Gia Lai province).

On the afternoon of October 4, this 800CV fishing boat departed from Ca Na Border Control Station, Khanh Hoa province, with 11 crew members to go out to sea to fish.

At 10:30 p.m. the same day, Mr. Ut's fishing boat was sunk by a Korean oil tanker while it was about 17 nautical miles southeast of Ca Na estuary.

After the incident, the cargo ship continued its journey without organizing a search and rescue. Authorities believe that due to the darkness and limited visibility, the oil tanker did not detect the accident.

After the accident, the fishing boat sent out an emergency distress signal before sinking completely. Fortunately, a Gia Lai fishing boat operating nearby, captained by Nguyen Van Tao (36 years old, resident of Cat Tien commune), approached and rescued 10 crew members.

The unfortunate person missing in the accident was the captain and owner of the ship, Nguyen Tran Ut. Authorities believe that Mr. Ut was likely trapped in the ship's cabin. The rescued crew members are currently being taken to Ca Na fishing port, Khanh Hoa province.

Gia Lai provincial authorities requested the Navy Command, Coast Guard and Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center of Regions II and IV to mobilize means to organize search and rescue for Captain Ut; proposed the Provincial People's Committee to notify and discuss with the Maritime Administration to direct the situation of the Korean oil tanker to coordinate the solution.

Fishing boat with 8 Gia Lai fishermen missing for 9th day

After 9 days of losing contact, fishing boat BD-97258 with 8 fishermen, owned and captained by Mr. Huynh Van Son (44 years old), resident of Kim Giao Thien residential group, Hoai Nhon Dong ward, is still missing.

As reported, this ship lost contact since the night of September 27 and has not been found yet, although search forces have applied many search and rescue methods.

This boat, which is engaged in both trawling and tuna fishing, departed from Ca Na Border Control Station, Khanh Hoa Province on September 12. In addition to Captain Son, there were 7 other workers on board from Gia Lai, Lam Dong and Hai Phong provinces.

The fishing boat’s last position before losing connection at 8:13 p.m. on September 27 was 147 nautical miles from Quy Nhon Ward, Gia Lai. Before losing connection, the boat was moving at 2 nautical miles/hour, about 154 nautical miles northeast of the path of storm No. 10.
