Request to review recruitment after fake PhD teaching at many schools

Ho Chi Minh City colleges and intermediate schools must review their recruitment practices after a person used a fake doctorate to teach at many schools, according to the request of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs.

The Department requested that schools clearly state the working time, position, title, and total teaching hours of Mr. Nguyen Truong Hai, born in 1981, at the unit, if any. This person was discovered using a fake PhD in Computer Science to apply for jobs at many universities and colleges in Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition, schools must fully comply with current regulations on teacher recruitment and management. Schools should pay special attention to examining and verifying the qualifications and certificates of successful candidates before signing employment contracts.

In October, Vietnam University of Industry and Commerce discovered that Mr. Nguyen Truong Hai, Head of the Information Technology Department, used fake master's and doctoral degrees.

When submitting his application, he submitted notarized copies of his master’s and doctoral degrees in Computer Science, both awarded by the University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. However, the school said that Mr. Hai’s degree information did not match the school’s data.

In addition to the Vietnam College of Industry and Commerce, many other universities and colleges in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed that Mr. Hai had participated in official or guest lectures, such as Saigon University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Hutech), Van Hien..., from 2016 to present. The common point is that after the schools suspected or discovered fake degrees, Mr. Hai quit his job and cut off all contact.

The Ministry of Education and Training has developed a software to look up national diplomas and certificates since 2021, which is currently being tested. In addition, according to regulations, educational institutions must publicize all issued diplomas and certificates to facilitate the search of relevant parties and social supervision. Many schools have developed software to look up this data.
