100 people killed in landslide in Papua New Guinea

About 100 people may have died in a serious landslide in Papua New Guinea, Australian media outlet ABC reported.

According to ABC, the accident happened at around 3 a.m. on May 24 (local time) in Kaokalam village, Porgera town, Enga province, about 600 km northwest of the capital Port Moresby.

ABC quoted Ms. Elizabeth Laruma, President of the Porgera Businesswomen Association, as saying that many houses were flattened when one side of the mountain near the area collapsed. The incident happened in the early morning, when people were sleeping, almost burying the entire village.

Regional media reported that the landslide affected operations at the Porgera gold mine operated by Barrick Gold. Witnesses said the actual death toll could be higher. Images on social media showed local residents trying to pull out bodies buried under rocks and fallen trees, but said it was difficult to locate the bodies. A road leading to the town of Porgera was also blocked by the landslide.

Currently, local authorities and Barrick Gold Company have no official information about the incident.
