During the summer of 2023, Lieutenant Phan Van Hai, Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Team, Dak Mil District Police, had a full schedule. In addition to ensuring his daily professional duties, every week he spent 4-5 sessions to participate in free swimming classes for children in Dak Mil District. Hai has been doing this job for 2 years now, every summer.
Lieutenant Pham Van Hai said: “Our team is quite small in number, so officers and soldiers have to be divided into groups, taking turns teaching swimming to children. Although busy, everyone tries to arrange their time, both doing professional work and teaching swimming, so that the children have the best skills.”
The model has maintained 5 swimming classes and expanded to 3 private swimming pools in Dak Mil town, Dak Lao commune and Dak R'la commune. Each class lasts more than 3 weeks, equipping children with basic swimming skills, including: swimming skills, first aid skills and methods to prevent and rescue drowning people.
Effectively deployed and spread in the community since the summer of 2022, the number of parents registering their children to participate in the summer of 2023 increased. In the classes, the "young students" were excited and delighted when the police officers taught them the necessary swimming skills and had the opportunity to have fun and make friends with a useful training playground during the summer.
Nguyen Thuy An, resident group 10, Dak Mil town (Dak Mil) shared: “I really enjoyed taking swimming lessons. Now I feel more confident when I go into the water, I am not as scared as before.”
Dak Mil District Police's free swimming classes are held twice a day, from Monday to Saturday. To ensure the quality and safety of the classes, Dak Mil District Police has arranged 16 instructors to teach. The instructors are affiliated officers and other units participating in the program. By the end of the summer of 2023, more than 500 children in the district were taught free swimming, bringing the total number of children taught and able to swim in the past 2 years to nearly 700.
