Cam Village after the flood - life is returning

Due to the impact of floods after the storm, Ban Cam village, Gia Phu commune is still in disarray. With the motto "no one is left behind", these days, the government, militia and volunteers have joined hands to "reconnect" the road, bring relief goods to the village, helping people overcome difficulties after the natural disaster.

From the center of Gia Phu commune, we followed a pickup truck carrying relief supplies to a collapsed road still littered with rocks and soil. The whole group had to wait for the militia and Cam villagers to come down on motorbikes to pick us up.

The road to the village is still not completely open, many sections have deep landslides, and can only be passed by motorbike. Along both sides of the road, rocks, tree branches, and fallen slopes are still visible, the traces of the flood are still clear.

When we reached the village entrance, we heard voices and laughter coming from the Ban Cam 1 cultural house. The villagers gathered in large numbers, the elderly and children were all excited. Many people enthusiastically came to the gate to welcome the relief team.

After days of being isolated due to landslides, this was the first time someone from the commune center came to the village.

Storm No. 10 caused considerable damage to Gia Phu commune: 117 households had their roofs blown off, damaged, eroded and flooded; 64.8 hectares of crops were flooded; many roads, including roads to Ban Cam, Nam Tra, Nam Phang villages and Provincial Road 152 were cut off; many households were isolated for many days, with an estimated total damage of more than 10 billion VND.

Immediately after the disaster occurred, local authorities mobilized local forces to urgently overcome the consequences.

“For 4 days, 44 militiamen helped level the roads to clear them. Some nights, we had to work until almost dawn,” said Nguyen Quang Huong, Commander of Gia Phu Commune Military Command.

Some road sections are still being repaired.

It took 2 days to clear the road to Nam Phang, and the militia had to work all night to clear the road to Ban Cam, allowing people to get down the mountain and creating conditions for relief teams to access.

Immediately after the road was temporarily opened, Gia Phu Commune People's Committee coordinated with the Provincial Buddhist Sangha to bring 200 relief gifts to the village. Bags of rice, boxes of instant noodles, and bags of necessities were passed around, bringing joy and warmth to each household.

Up to now, the commune has received 4 support groups with a total value of more than 100 million VND.

Knowing that Ban Cam was isolated, the unit was determined to find a way to bring gifts to the people,” said Venerable Thich Chan Tin, representative of the provincial Buddhist Sangha, while participating in the relief work with the delegation.

Among the people receiving gifts, Ms. Ma Thi Loi in Ban Cam 2, emotionally said: My house's roof was blown off, I couldn't go to the rice mill for several days, had to eat cassava and vegetables for meals. Today I received the gifts from the charity group, I am very happy.

Now, although many roofs are still unfinished and the roads are still full of rocks and dirt, life in Ban Cam has gradually returned to normal. In the midst of hardship, the love of people in the highlands creates the strength to help Ban Cam village in particular and many other villages and hamlets that have suffered losses quickly stabilize their lives after the storm and flood season.
