On the evening of October 5, the Department of Education and Training sent an urgent document to schools in the province allowing students to stay home from school on October 6 to prevent and guard against storm Matmo - the storm has weakened into a tropical depression but still poses the risk of causing heavy rain, flash floods and landslides.
However, in many schools in the highlands, where there are boarding students, many students were present at school from noon on October 5 to prepare for the new school week. In this situation, schools have urgently implemented boarding plans, preparing all conditions for accommodation, food, clean water and necessary necessities to ensure the safety of students.
Proactively respond and ensure student safety
At Tram Tau High School (Hanh Phuc commune), on October 6, although there was no teaching, the school still welcomed and arranged meals and accommodation for about 200 boarding students who were present at the school.
Teacher Do Thanh Cong - Principal of the school said: "Due to the characteristics of the highland terrain, landslides and floods often occur during heavy rains, which is very dangerous. From the afternoon of October 5, when students came to school, we proactively kept them there, not allowing them to go home at night. For students who have not yet come to school, we asked homeroom teachers to contact their parents to inform them of the holiday schedule and remind them not to move during this dangerous time."

In particular, the school has screened students who rent accommodation outside the school area to bring them back to live with boarding students, and has increased supervision to ensure that their daily activities are not affected. Food, clean water, blankets and essential living items are fully prepared by the school in case of prolonged heavy rain.
Thao Thi Bau, a student of class 10A2, shared: “On the afternoon of October 5, when I got to school, I received the notice of school closure. Because the road was long and it was dark, my friends and I could not return home. Teachers quickly arranged accommodation, helping us to live, study and play sports on campus in peace in case the weather suddenly turned bad.”
Early prevention, long-term planning

At Bat Xat Secondary and High School (Muong Hum Commune), flood prevention and control work has been deployed since October 4. Students are mainly from villages far from the school, the mountain roads are winding and steep, with a high risk of landslides, so the Board of Directors has proactively postponed the class schedule on October 6 to another class during the week.
At the same time, the school also sent a document to the Department of Education and Training and the People's Committee of Muong Hum commune about the plan to close the whole school to prevent risks due to extreme weather.
Teacher Vu Xuan Que, Principal of the school said: “We learned from the circulation of storm No. 3 Yagi in 2024 (the storm caused serious landslides in the boarding house and cafeteria of the school), so when there was an announcement about storm No. 11 (Matmo), we urgently came up with a response plan. Not only will we be off school on October 6, but depending on the weather in the coming days, we will consider when students can return to normal school.”

Along with that, Bat Xat Secondary and High School has fully prepared food, generators, clean water and necessary items such as beds, mats, blankets, medicine, medical supplies... ready to serve 550 boarding students within 7 days, if the weather becomes complicated.
It is expected that on October 7, schools in the province will allow students to return to school as usual. However, due to the complicated weather conditions, the provincial education and training sector has directed educational institutions to proactively monitor the developments of floods and storm circulation from October 7 to report to the People's Committees of communes, wards and the Department to consider allowing students to continue to stay home from school if the weather conditions remain complicated.
The Department of Education and Training requests units to urgently deploy measures to prevent and combat natural disasters; closely monitor warning bulletins, regularly update weather developments; review and supplement plans to ensure absolute safety for students, teachers and educational administrators, especially at facilities with boarding and semi-boarding students. Schools need to reinforce facilities, relocate important assets, organize 24/24 hour duty and strictly implement the "4 on-site" motto.

According to the forecast of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from October 6 to 8, the North will continue to have heavy rain, with thunderstorms and strong gusts of wind in many places. In this context, schools in the highlands have shown a proactive, flexible and responsible spirit in disaster prevention and control, ensuring maximum safety for students and teachers.
Not only stopping at proactively letting students take time off from school, actively taking care of accommodation and living conditions for boarding students has demonstrated the dedication and initiative in disaster prevention and avoidance of schools, all for the goal of ensuring absolute safety for teachers and students.
