Apple brings 3D Touch back to iPhone with iOS 17

According to AppleInsider , Apple abandoned the hardware-based 3D Touch feature with a force-touch display in 2019. At that time, analysts said that few users used this feature, but those who did use it liked it.

Instead, Apple has implemented haptic feedback, which is not pressure-sensitive but rather a fake response that never feels real. That’s largely because 3D Touch is so quick when you tap an app to open a pop-up menu. Now, as Apple releases the second developer beta of iOS 17, it looks like it’s trying to recreate 3D Touch.

First spotted by Twitter user AppleIntro, the revamped Settings app now includes a section actually called “3D & Haptic Touch.” In the first beta, searching for that name would take users to the old Haptic Touch settings, but it has now been renamed to list both. In the Accessibility section of Settings, the old Haptic Touch section is also available, but allows users to choose whether the haptic touch responds to fast or slow taps.

Now, the same section that has the 3D Touch option with a slider to choose the amount of pressure required to activate the feature also changes the touch duration setting a bit, now with a Default option, alongside Fast and Slow. All will be confirmed after iOS 17 is officially released next September.
