The iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1 updates mark the return of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) measurement to Apple Watch models sold in the US — a function that was previously disabled due to a long-standing patent dispute with health technology company Masimo.
The move shows that Apple has made some progress in the legal battle, while also fully restoring the health tracking experience for users in its most important market.

The long-running legal battle with Masimo forced Apple to temporarily stop selling the Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 in the US in late 2023. Although the products returned to shelves in early 2024, the blood oxygen level measurement (SpO2) feature was still disabled due to regulatory requirements.
The absence of this feature not only affects the new user experience, but also makes it difficult for customers who need to repair the device: replacement models returned under warranty also no longer support SpO2 measurement, even if the device previously had this feature.
Apple announced that users can re-access “redesigned blood oxygen measurement features” by upgrading their iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and their Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1. According to the company representative, SpO2 measurement data will be collected and processed directly on the iPhone, with results clearly displayed in the Breathing section of the Health app, providing a more accurate and convenient health monitoring experience for users.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is expected to introduce a new blood pressure monitoring feature on the Apple Watch Series 11, the smartwatch model that will launch next month with the iPhone 17. This blood pressure measuring technology works similarly to the features that measure blood oxygen levels and monitor sleep apnea, helping to warn users of potential health risks based on the collected results.
Although blood pressure sensors have not received official FDA approval like ECG sensors, users can still take advantage of the device to conveniently and proactively monitor their personal health.
