On February 1, speaking to the press, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the country will request to include fuel for nuclear power plants in the 13th package of sanctions of the European Union (EU) against Russia.

However, Mr. Tusk also confirmed that many countries supporting Ukraine are dependent on fuel supplied by Russia.

The new sanctions package is expected to focus on preventing the possibility of “evading” sanctions, especially for goods that can be used in the military. The sanctions package will also involve a series of individuals and legal entities.

Earlier, AFP reported that an EU official said on January 19 that the alliance is expected to adopt a new package of sanctions against Moscow next February, marking the second anniversary of the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The EU has imposed 12 packages of sanctions on Russia since Moscow launched a special military operation in the neighboring country in February 2022.

EU officials said the bloc's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell "wants to increase economic pressure on Russia on the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine".

European diplomats admit that the 27-nation bloc is finding it increasingly difficult to agree on options for a new package of sanctions against Russia aimed at restricting its financial resources.
