According to Vietnam Social Security, the 2024 Law on Health Insurance has just been issued and will take effect from July 1, 2025, in the direction of continuing to expand and ensure more health insurance benefits for participants, especially for serious illnesses with high treatment costs.
Recently, there has been information on social networks that from 2026, health insurance will not cover serious illnesses or surgeries, causing confusion and anxiety among people.
Vietnam Social Security confirmed that this is fake news, completely true and recommends that people be vigilant against this false information and not share fake news.

To find out information about health insurance policies, always look up information from the official channel of Vietnam Social Security or contact the nearest Social Security agency.
Regarding the actual payment of medical examination and treatment costs for health insurance participants, the Social Insurance Agency said that participants are paid from 80% to 100% of medical examination and treatment costs according to the benefits and levels of the health insurance card. Vulnerable groups (children under 6 years old, the poor, near-poor, ethnic minorities...) are always guaranteed support by the state for health insurance participation costs.
The Health Insurance Fund covers more than 10,000 technical services (with many high-tech techniques such as cardiovascular surgery, organ transplants, MRI, CT, PET-CT,...) and pays for 1,037 active pharmaceutical ingredients with thousands of preparations; including many high-cost drugs for treating cancer and serious diseases.
According to statistics from the Social Insurance from 2020 to August 2025, 41,188 patients were paid from 500 million VND to over 2 billion VND by the Health Insurance Fund for medical examination and treatment costs with a total expenditure of more than 33,000 billion VND. In particular, there was 1 patient in Vinh Long province who was paid for medical examination and treatment costs up to nearly 28 billion VND.
Social insurance recommends that people feel secure in participating and maintaining their health insurance cards to be protected, have their health taken care of, and not have their legitimate rights affected.
