Concerns about rewarding students with high graduation scores

On August 19, the People's Committee of Nghe An province issued a decision to reward students with excellent achievements and high scores in the 2024 high school graduation exam.

According to this decision, certificates of merit from the Provincial People's Committee Chairman will be awarded to 66 students with high scores in the 2024 high school graduation exam.

The reward for each student is 18.72 million VND; the total reward on this occasion is more than 1.2 billion VND.

The above rewards have caused mixed public opinion. A high school teacher in Nghe An expressed his opinion: “The high school graduation exam is a regular, compulsory test; it is not an exam for gifted or talented students, the test questions are of average difficulty. Therefore, rewarding high school students with high scores with a large sum of money and a Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee is unreasonable.”

For comparison, the above teacher said that teachers who won the title in the provincial excellent teacher competition were only awarded about 1.8 million VND and were not awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Provincial People's Committee Chairman.

On the other hand, excellent and good graduates from universities, colleges and secondary schools in Nghe An province were not awarded by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee.

The bonus for Nghe An students who get high graduation scores is 10 times higher than the basic salary; even higher than the bonus for the title of Excellent Teacher (the bonus is 9 times the basic salary). While this is a noble title conferred by the President , the criteria and conditions are very difficult.

Faced with the above concerns and shortcomings, on August 25, in an exchange with reporters, the leader of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee said that he would review and re-examine this content to ensure proper rewards that have the effect of motivating and encouraging students to excel in their studies and training.
