Bangladesh stands at a 'crossroads', the interim government sets priorities, sends a message to the international community, and says what about the general election?

In his first major speech to foreign diplomats in the capital Dhaka since taking office, Bangladesh's caretaker government leader Muhammad Yunus called for comprehensive reforms before holding a general election.

In his speech, Mr. Yunus outlined the interim government's roadmap to a stable and democratic Bangladesh, starting with free and fair elections.

Stating that restoring law and order in the country is the government's top priority, he stressed: "We will hold free and fair elections as soon as we complete the task of implementing important reforms in the election commission, judiciary, civil administration, security forces and media."

According to the Chief Adviser to the Bangladesh interim government, the South Asian country "will achieve normalcy , with the unwavering support of the patriotic people and armed forces... The armed forces will continue to serve in support of the civil administration as long as the situation requires it".

In addition to political reform, Bangladesh also needs strong economic reform. According to the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize winner, the South Asian country suffered from the "brutal dictatorship" of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which led to widespread corruption and mismanagement.

The interim government will carry out far-reaching economic reforms to restore macroeconomic stability and sustain growth.

In a message to the international community, he called on trade and investment partners to maintain confidence in Bangladesh, stating: "We will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the global clothing supply chain in which we are a key player."

Calling for continued support for Bangladesh in its reconstruction and transition to democracy, Mr. Yunus assured diplomats that he would maintain his role as a supporter of multilateralism, with the United Nations (UN) at the center of his foreign policy.

The head of Bangladesh's interim government expressed confidence that "all friends and partners in the international community will stand with the government and people of Bangladesh as we chart a new democratic future".

Concluding the message, Chief Adviser to the Bangladesh Interim Government, Yunus, said: "Bangladesh is at the crossroads of a new beginning. Our brave students and people deserve a lasting transformation for the country."

According to him, this is a difficult journey and " we need to realize their aspirations as soon as possible. We must create opportunities to build a new Bangladesh that is free from poverty and prosperous".
