Typhoon Bebinca is forecast to have a major impact in China, will it have an impact on Vietnam?

The latest storm information from the Philippine state weather agency PAGASA shows that as of the afternoon of September 12, Typhoon Bebinca was outside the Philippine forecast area. PAGASA forecasts that Bebinca may enter the Philippine forecast area on September 13 and has been given the local name Ferdie.

Typhoon Bebinca was last located 1,885 km east of Northern Luzon, Philippines, with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h and moving north at 35 km/h.

When it enters the Philippines' forecast area, Bebinca will become the sixth storm to affect the country during the 2024 typhoon season.

Around the night of September 14, the typhoon will move into the eastern waters of the East China Sea, and will then make landfall on the coast from Zhejiang to northern Fujian, East China on the morning of September 16 as a typhoon or strong typhoon, or level 13-14. Due to the impact of the typhoon, Zhejiang and Fujian provinces will experience heavy rain from September 16 to 17.

Previously, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Tropical Storm Bebinca formed on September 10 in the western Pacific Ocean and is expected to intensify as it moves northwest. The agency's forecast also said that Bebinca could reach typhoon level by the afternoon of September 12.

Typhoon Bebinca is expected to make landfall on China’s east coast early on September 16, threatening to bring heavy rain that could disrupt oil refineries, LNG terminals and paralyze transportation in China, Bloomberg reported.

Typhoon Bebinca also comes as China prepares for the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, which begins on September 15. Severe weather is likely to disrupt travel and impact consumption in China, Bloomberg noted.

The storm's path is taking it to coastal areas between China's Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, meaning the latest storm in the western Pacific could potentially lead to the closure of Zhoushan port and oil refineries in Ningbo.

According to the latest storm forecast from China's National Meteorological Center, Typhoon Bebinca will have wind speeds of up to 162 km/h.

Typhoon Bebinca is currently forecast to make landfall in mainland China as a Category 2 storm on the 5-point Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. China's weather agency forecasts that Typhoon Bebinca will weaken rapidly after making landfall.

Thus, according to the above forecast, storm Bebinca is unlikely to make direct landfall in Vietnam.
