Storm Matmo may reach level 13 at noon on October 5, entering the Gulf of Tonkin

(Dan Tri) - It is forecasted that around noon and afternoon tomorrow, October 5, storm Matmo may pass through Leizhou peninsula (China) with maximum intensity of level 13, gusting to level 16, then enter the Gulf of Tonkin.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 11:00 a.m. on October 4, storm No. 11 (storm Matmo) was about 390 km east-northeast of Hoang Sa special zone. The strongest wind near the storm center was level 11 (103-117 km/h), gusting to level 14.

In the next 24 hours, the storm will move in a West-Northwest direction at a speed of about 25km/h. By noon and afternoon tomorrow, October 5, storm Matmo may pass through Leizhou Peninsula (China) with a maximum intensity of level 13, gusting to level 16, and then enter the Gulf of Tonkin.

It is forecasted that in the early morning of October 6, storm Matmo is likely to make landfall in the northeastern region of our country.

Based on the analysis of data over the past 12 hours, the hydrometeorological agency said that after passing through Leizhou Island (China) and moving into the northern Gulf of Tonkin, storm Matmo may tend to veer north.

With this trend, the area directly affected by the storm on the mainland of our country is likely to decrease. The strongest wind on the mainland along the coast of Quang Ninh is forecasted to be at level 8-9, gusting to level 11.

Rainfall in Thanh Hoa, the Northern Delta and Hanoi is expected to be 50-150mm.

If storm Matmo continues to move further north, the impact of wind and rain in the delta region and Hanoi will decrease further.

The Japan Meteorological Station and Hong Kong Meteorological Station both assessed that at noon on October 4, storm Matmo was at 110km/h, and could reach its peak of 145km/h tomorrow.

Due to the influence of storm No. 11, the North East Sea area has strong winds of level 8-10, the area near the storm's eye has winds of level 11-13, gusts of level 16, waves 4-6m high, the area near the storm's eye is 6-8m, the sea is very rough.

From the afternoon of October 5, the sea area east of the Northern Gulf of Tonkin (including Bach Long Vi special zone) will have winds gradually increasing to level 6-7, then increasing to level 8-9.

From the evening of October 5, the Northern Gulf of Tonkin area (including Bach Long Vi, Van Don, Co To, Cat Hai and Hon Dau islands) will experience winds gradually increasing to level 8-9, waves 2-4m high, near the storm center will experience winds of level 10-11, gusts of level 14, waves 3-5m high, and very rough seas.

Coastal areas and islands in Quang Ninh - Hai Phong have storm surges of 0.4-0.6m. Beware of flooding in low-lying coastal areas and river mouths due to surges and big waves from the afternoon and evening of October 5.

Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, warned that due to the influence of storm No. 11, the Northern region, Thanh Hoa - Nghe An provinces will have heavy rain, the rain will last from the night of October 5 to the end of the night of October 7, with common rainfall of 100-200mm, in some places over 300mm.

The focus of rain is the mountainous and midland areas of the North, with common rainfall of 150-250mm, and locally over 400mm.

With heavy rain, local hydrometeorological agencies warned of a flood lasting from October 6 to 9, on rivers in the Northern region, Thanh Hoa - Nghe An.

Storm Matmo's circulation will also cause heavy rain in Hanoi with average rainfall of 100-200mm, the rain will concentrate in the early morning of October 6, and last until the next morning of October 7.
